OBITUARY OF ALAN SCHLESINGER (NÉ ADOLPH WEINSTOCK)
Alan Schlesinger (né Adolph Weinstock), was born on November 2, 1929, on the lower east side in NYC to Isidore and Helen Weinstock. He later moved to Beck street in the Bronx with his extended family. When he was 5 years old, Alan's father passed away. His mother remarried Sam Schlesinger of Perth Amboy, NJ, who adopted Alan. As was tradition in Perth Amboy, everyone had a nickname. Alan earned the moniker “Puffy”- a name by which he would forever be known, by his spouse, cherished friends, children, and grandchildren.
Alan was an accomplished athlete at Perth Amboy High School, earning All-State honors in basketball, football, and track. He continued his athletic career at Rutgers University on a basketball scholarship, where he was a proud member of the Phi Kappa Pi fraternity and joined the Air Force ROTC.
During the summer of his junior year at Rutgers, Puffy worked as a camp counselor in Michigan, where he met Gwen Schwarz of Teaneck, NJ. After graduating, they married, and Puffy joined the Air Force as a Second Lieutenant. He served proudly at Anderson Air Force Base on Guam during the Korean War.
After his service, Puffy and Gwen moved to Rotterdam, Netherlands, where he attended medical school at Leyden University. Following an internship at Seton Hall at the Margaret Hague hospital in Jersey CIty, NJ, Puffy and Gwen settled in Cincinnati, where Puffy established a family practice. After a change of plans, giving up his practice, Puffy completed a radiology residency in 1971 and became an attending radiologist at The Jewish Hospital and an active member of the academy of medicine in Cincinnati.
Alan married twice more, first to Liz Venn and later to Ann Stace-Woods.
Alan was always know by his kindness and his easy smile. He was an avid reader and wordsmith. He leaves behind four sons - Scott (Ann Marie), Craig (Karen), Neal (Emy), and Mark (Laura), along with 10 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and 3 stepchildren: Allison (Ross), Jonathan (Melanie), and Jennifer, and their families. Alan’s legacy will live on through the many lives he touched with love and kindness.
