Barbara Ann Winters

February 1, 1940 — January 20, 2026

Barbara Ann Winters passed away surrounded by the love of her family on January 20, 2026. Born on February 1, 1940, in Effingham, Illinois, Barbara led a life rich with passion, teaching, and deep connections that will forever echo in the hearts of those she leaves behind.

Barbara shared a close relationship with her parents that set the foundation for generations to come. Growing up in Flora, Illinois, she worked as a carhop waitress at her mother’s restaurant, The West Y, where she discovered her love for people and roller skating. Those early customer service days inspired her path as a devoted educator, shaping young minds in elementary schools across Fostoria, Kansas and Mason, Ohio. Her passion for teaching extended beyond the classroom into tutoring, where her dedication to nurturing literacy truly shone. Her love for education was matched only by her zest for life, a joy she brought to everything she did.

Barbara’s skin may have glowed, but it was her personality that truly shined. Known for her constant smile, laughter, and welcoming nature, she effortlessly made friends wherever she went, proving that she truly never knew a stranger. A vibrant force, Barbara radiated joy through her many passions. She loved dancing and was exceptional at it. She thrived in dance competitions and shared her skills through lessons in West Coast swing, cha-cha, and line dancing. She also enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, from bowling and relaxing by her pool to cruising in her Mustang on a sunny day.

Family was central to Barbara’s life. She took pride in being a mother to her children, Kelly Marie (Jeff) Richards and Michael Shawn (Wendy Szymczak) Winters. Barbara and her daughter talked on the phone nearly every day and shared so many special memories. One of their favorite things to do together was to go shopping at Kenwood Mall, laughing and keeping up with all the latest trends. Barbara cherished her visits with her son in New York City, savoring the time together and the little joys - like exploring the city and enjoying new foods - that made each trip so special. The joy of being a grandmother to Courtney Ann (Amanda Cappa) Richards, Kyle Jeffrey Richards (Claire Wilburn), and Miles Hudson Winters brought her immeasurable happiness. Barbara filled her life with cherished moments, attending every sporting event, music program, and award ceremony, rallying behind her grandchildren with unwavering support. Dancing with her grandson Miles always brought her so much joy and she absolutely loved going to country concerts with her daughter, granddaughter Courtney, and grandson Kyle - moments that will forever hold a special place in their hearts.

She attended many car shows with her husband of 65 years, Robert “Bob” Eugene Winters, creating cherished memories in their hot rods. Barbara and Bob often found themselves sharing laughter and love at their favorite gathering spot - the Waffle House.

Barbara was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bob, who was her partner in life and in all adventures, and her parents, Marion and Marie Levitt. She leaves behind her adoring children, grandchildren, and her beloved dog, Sydney, who brought her comfort and companionship through the years.

Barbara’s legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will live on in all who knew her. Her advice to us all? “Just be cool.”

There will be no services at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Barbara’s name can be made to The Christian Village at Mason.
