Dana L. McQuinn passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving family and under the compassionate care of hospice.
Born on February 19, 1942, in Montgomery, West Virginia, Dana went on to lead a life marked by dedication, compassion, and deep commitment to both his profession and those he served. He graduated from Taylor University with a degree in Biology and earned his Doctor of Optometry from The Ohio State University in 1970. Shortly thereafter he established a private optometry practice in Las Cruces, New Mexico, where he would serve the community for decades with skill and integrity. A highly respected optometrist, Dana built a thriving practice where even his beloved wife and daughters worked proudly by his side.
Dana was a longtime member of University Presbyterian Church in Las Cruces, attending faithfully for over 30 years. His faith and generosity extended far beyond the borders of his practice and church. A former Peace Corps volunteer, Dana devoted his time and expertise on numerous mission trips to underserved communities in countries such as Mexico, Haiti, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic, offering eye exams and glasses to those in need.
A passionate Buckeye, Dana remained deeply involved with The Ohio State University throughout his life. He proudly wore scarlet and gray, supported countless university functions, and could often be found cheering on the Buckeyes with infectious enthusiasm. Dana expanded his team loyalties to include the New Mexico State University Aggies, where he also served as the team optometrist and loyal fan.
Dana found great joy in the game of golf, both for the sport itself and the camaraderie it fostered. He formed many lasting friendships on the course and bonds that stretched across the country.
Dana is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Sandra J. McQuinn (née Ewing); his daughters, Marce (Tim) Bradley and Ashley (Zac Blotter) McQuinn; and his son-in-law, Erik Jackson. He was a proud grandfather to Jessamy McQuinn; Kade, Addison, Quinn, and Tatem Bradley; and Dylan and Kian Jackson. He is also survived by his sister, Judith King, nephews, Shawn King and Jeremy Dana King, and numerous other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Holly McQuinn; his parents, Hansel and Elizabeth McQuinn (née Staley); Sandra’s parents, Lowel and Esther Ewing; and his brothers-in-law, Allen Ewing, Tom King and Ken Kendall.
Dana’s legacy is one of service, kindness, devotion to family, and a deep love for his community and alma mater. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
