Darrell Dean Howard, a devoted family man, cherished friend, and retired truck driver from Teamsters Union Local 100, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026, in Sun City Center, Florida. Born on July 10, 1946, in Henryville, Indiana, Darrell’s journey through life was marked by unwavering humility, generosity, and a steadfast commitment to those he loved.
Darrell was raised in Hyden, Kentucky, a place that left an indelible mark on his heart. His affinity for the color blue and his lifelong passion as a huge University of Kentucky basketball fan reflected the deep roots he had in Kentucky culture. As a young man Darrell moved to Southwest Ohio, where he continued to build a life filled with cherished relationships and meaningful experiences.
Darrell found joy in golf and was known among friends for his skill at poker, often outwitting his companions with quiet confidence. Yet, perhaps his greatest joy came from creating lasting memories with his family, especially cherished weekends spent at Rocky Fork Lake.
He was known for being one of the most authentic gentlemen you would meet—grounded and humble regardless of his many achievements. Darrell gave generously and quietly, never seeking recognition for his kindness. His devotion to family and friends was evident in every aspect of his life, touching the hearts of all who knew him.
Darrell is lovingly remembered by his son, Matt Hayes, and daughter-in-law, Stephanie; his grandsons, Mathew Jr. and Owen Hayes; his sisters, Linda (Randy) Lawson and Brenda (David) Roark; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. His circle of friends spanned both Ohio and Florida, a testament to the genuine connections he nurtured throughout his life. He was also deeply bonded to his beloved Westie, Rowdy, whose companionship brought him endless joy.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Adam and Nellie Howard (nee Maggard), his brothers Delmer, Ralph, and Denzil Howard, and his sister Evelyn Gibson. Their memories live on in the hearts of all who loved Darrell.
Visitation in honor of Darrell will take place on April 24, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Mueller Funeral Home, located at 6791 Tylersville Rd, Mason, Ohio, 45040. A funeral service will begin at 1:00 PM, with a graveside service at Rose Hill Cemetery, 171 Mason Montgomery Road, Mason, Ohio, immediately following.
If desired, memorial donations may be directed to: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to Shriners Children's.
Darrell's life was one marked by quiet strength, enduring loyalty, and heartfelt generosity. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories that will continue to inspire all who had the privilege to know him. He will be sincerely missed and forever remembered.
