Doug graduated Glenbrook North High School in 1989 and went on to receive his Bachelor of Science degree from Bradley University in 1993, where he met his wife, Chris. They settled in Ohio, where they were married 25 years ago on October 11 th and raised their children, Meghan and Ian.
Doug was his family’s superhero and their rock. He was his children’s biggest cheerleader and could always be found at school events, softball games, water polo matches, and swim meets. He was always quick to volunteer and always gave more than asked. His priority was his family and he valued every moment with them, as well as the varied assortment of pets—reptiles, ferrets, cats, dogs--- that he came to love and care for over the years. Doug knew how to form deep and lasting friendships that left no doubt he would always be there for both the good and the bad.
Chris was the center of Doug’s world, and it showed. Doug was always there to lift her up, laugh with her, really hear her, and share her struggle with their joint inability to make decisions. Most of all, he loved her.
Doug spent summers in his younger years working and fishing at his family’s fishing camp Burke Cedar Lake Lodge in Canada. He became a dedicated fitness buff, training for the Spartan Races he ran with his brother Kevin, nephew Drew, and his kids Meghan and Ian. He was also a huge Cowboys fan, regardless of their season records.
He was quick to find humor in just about any situation and easy to talk to, and could be seen talking with all the neighbors on his daily morning walks with his dog, Finn. He was loved and he will be missed.
Preceded in death by his parents, James, and Connie Bee Burke, and one brother, Lester Burke.
Doug is survived by his beloved wife, Chris (nee Hoehne) Burke, his two children, Meghan and Ian Burke, parents in law, Jeffry and Marilyn Hoehne, siblings Kathy (Bob) Ecob, Michael (Deb) Burke, Kevin (Dawn) Burke and Scott Burke, siblings in law Jennifer (Edward) Kim, Amie (Mike) Synan and Mark (Farrah) Hoehne, nieces and nephews, Tom (Zany) Ecob, Dean Burke, Drew Burke, Fischer Burke, Ella Burke, Sydney Kim, Emily Kim, Ethan Kim, Alyxandra Synan, Keegan Synan, Ava Hoehne, Evan Hoehne, and Miles Hoehne, and many cherished friends, colleagues, and extended family.
