Edward W. McEleney

November 12, 1937 — May 18, 2025

West Chester

Edward W. McEleney, age 87, passed away peacefully at his residence on Sunday, May 18, 2025, surrounded by his loving family and under the care of hospice.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 12, 1937, Ed was the son of Edward P. McEleney, Jr. and Dorothy (née Eagles) McEleney. A proud Boston native, Ed met the love of his life, Jean, on a blind date. The two married in 1959, just months after Ed graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a degree in Dairy Technology.

Ed began his professional life working in a dairy laboratory in upstate New York before returning to his hometown to join the dairy division of the United States Department of Agriculture. He devoted his entire career to the USDA, where his dedication and expertise were widely respected.

In retirement, Ed and Jean moved to Norris, Tennessee, in 1993, where they spent over two decades and became deeply involved in the community. Ed was an active member of his church for 26 years, where he served as Chairman of the Executive Committee. He also contributed to local environmental efforts as Chairman of the Watershed Board.

In later years, Ed and Jean moved to West Chester in 2019 to be closer to family.

Ed was recently recognized as a 60-year Mason and loved reading anything he could. Ed will be remembered for his quiet strength, steadfast love for his family, and his deep sense of community service. He leaves behind a legacy of integrity, kindness, and devotion to those he loved and served.

Ed is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Jean (nee Elliot); children, Lauren (Dave) Nudge, Michael (Teresa) McEleney and Sean (Trayci Green) McEleney; grandchildren, Sarah (Will) Huber and Justin (Shannon) McEleney; and great grandchildren Lincoln Huber, Arwen Huber, Mason McEleney and Brogan McEleney.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Lauraine Holmes, Regina McEleney and Janet McEleney.
