Gerald Martin Patterson

June 14, 1944 — June 19, 2024

Gerald (Gerry) Martin Patterson, 80 years and 5 days, of Lebanon, Ohio, passed away at home in the early morning of June 19, 2024.

Gerry was born on June 14, 1944, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to John McIntyre and Roberta Jean (Martin) Patterson. On New Year’s Eve 1965, Gerry met the love of his life Gertrude Lorraine McGuire. The two wed on September 9, 1967. Their marriage was blessed with eight children on earth and two in Heaven.

Gerry is survived by his beloved wife Gert, children Fr. John Patterson, SOLT; Brian (Christy); Sr. Mary Mediatrix of All Grace, SOLT; Chris; Mary (Joe) Sharpshair; Sarah (Sean) Ater; Mike (Haley); Maggie (John) Meckley; 29 beloved grandchildren; a brother John and a sister Susan (Denny) Douglas; and multiple siblings-in-law.

He is predeceased by two miscarried children (Elizabeth and Dakota), his parents, sister Karen, parents-in-law Joe and Mary (Pendergast) McGuire, brother-in-law Tom, and numerous unborn grandchildren.

On August 17, 1967, Gerry was baptized and received into the Catholic Church at St. Louis Church, Cincinnati, and began life as a new creation in Jesus Christ, shaping his entire identity. Gerry embraced his Catholic faith and not only did he never miss a Sunday Mass, he frequently attended daily Mass, holy hours, and had a great love for the rosary.

After graduating from Loveland High School in 1962, Gerry entered the apprentice program at GE Aircraft Business School (now GE Aviation) and began his 45 years and 6 months career in draftsmanship. Over his tenure, he was promoted to management and teaching roles. Gerry was an innovative draftsman who introduced new ways to read engine designs for those who would manufacture parts, and these innovations are used to this day.

Gerry was known by all for his calm and generous spirit, acts of service, admirable work ethic, and absolute dedication to his wife and children.  Over the years, Gerry was active in pro-life work in Warren County, including serving as president. While a parishioner at St. Francis de Sales in Lebanon, he served on the school board, parish council, lector ministry, money counting, basketball coaching, and pro-life work.

The last many years of Gerry’s life were filled with trial due to heart problems, but through Divine Providence and with the intervention of doctors, Gerry was gifted with 4 and a half more years of life. In that time, he was able to meet 10 more grandchildren and celebrate 56 years of marriage.

Although our hearts are heavy with the loss of our husband, father, grandfather, and friend, our hearts are also filled with joy that he was able to die peacefully, surrounded by family and able to receive the final sacraments. We hope to meet again in our Heavenly home. We give all praise and thanks to Jesus for the gift of his life.
