James A. "Jim" Purvis, a dedicated veterinarian and cherished member of his community, passed away on March 19, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on July 5, 1938, in Butler, Pennsylvania, Jim devoted 42 years to the care and well-being of animals, earning the respect and gratitude of countless pet owners and colleagues throughout his distinguished career.
Jim's journey was marked not only by his professional achievements but also by his deep commitment to community service and leadership. Throughout the years, he actively contributed to numerous organizations, including the PAWS Adoption Center, the Rotary Club in Middletown, the YMCA of Middletown, and the Middletown Presbyterian Church. Known for his dedication to youth development, he led both the Boy Scouts and Indian Princesses programs and was a respected member of the Butler County Veterinary Society.
Jim met the love of his life, Martha Purvis, during his college years, a partnership that lasted an inspiring 65 years. Together, they built a life rich with family and fellowship. Jim and Martha raised three children: Mike (Lucy) Purvis, Kay (Mark) Glancy, and Ann (Eric) Quackenbush. His legacy extends lovingly through nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and his sister, Nancy Willis and her children, Joe Bechtel and Janet (Frank) Newham, and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mildred Purvis, and his brother-in-law, Paul Willis.
Jim’s personal passions reflected his patient and meticulous nature. He enjoyed woodcarving, golf, and fishing, pastimes that allowed him to appreciate the tranquility and beauty of the natural world he so often sought to protect in his professional life.
A memorial gathering to celebrate Jim’s life will be held on March 28, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Otterbein Lebanon Chapel, located at 585 Ohio 741, Lebanon, Ohio 45036.
If desired, memorial donations may be directed to: Otterbein Senior Life or to Ohio’s Hospice of Butler and Warren Counties.
Jim leaves behind a legacy of compassion, leadership, and unwavering dedication to his family, his profession, and his community.
