JoAnn S. Hulgin (nee Scholl) passed away peacefully at her home in Franklin, Ohio on Saturday, December 13th, 2025, at the age of 82. She was born on July 19, 1943, in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Walter J. Scholl and Mary (nee Lasita) Scholl. In addition to her parents, JoAnn is preceded in death by her beloved husband James K. Hulgin (Jim), her cherished son Daniel K. Hulgin (Dan), her loving sister Patricia A. Schmidlin (Pat) and her son-in-law Donald J. (Patti) Theiss.
She was a devoted mother to Patti (nee Hulgin) Theiss, the late Dan Hulgin and Mike Hulgin, an adoring grandmother to Maria (nee Hulgin)(Scott) Terry, as well as great grandmother to Raymond, Savannah and Dominick Terry. JoAnn also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews including Lori (nee Schmidlin) Franklin, Tom Schmidlin, Raymond Hulgin, Kathi (nee Hulgin) Drake and numerous others including great nieces and nephews.
JoAnn grew up in Winton Place and attended St. X. Commercial High School. She worked several jobs over the years including the Union Central Life Insurance Company, Elder Beerman, First National Bank and finally retired from University Hospital where she worked as an Administrative Assistant in the Physical Therapy department.
She met Jim at a mutual friend’s wedding. After dating a little over a year, they were engaged and exchanged vows on June 2, 1962 at St. Vivian Church in Finneytown, Ohio. She enjoyed a remarkable journey of love and partnership with Jim that lasted for more than 63 years.
Together, they built several new homes over the years, her favorite being in Northern Michigan on the shores of Lake Huron where she and Jim retired. They cherished the quiet moments, slower lifestyle and natural beauty of the lake, the animals and the surrounding nature.
JoAnn had a zest for life and a passion for travel, which she shared with her husband. They embraced adventure, spending four years living in an RV as they traveled all across America and Canada, creating cherished memories along the way.
JoAnn will be deeply missed, yet her spirit and the love she fostered will continue to resonate within the hearts of those she touched. She was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Her legacy continues through her loving family and she will be remembered fondly.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at a visitation service to be held Monday, December 22, 2025 at Mueller Funeral Home, 6791 Tylersville Road, Mason, Ohio from 10:30 – 11:00; followed by a blessing and committal service at Gate of Heaven Cemetery Chapel in Cincinnati, Ohio, at 11:30.
Given JoAnn’s love of nature, especially trees and spending time in the woods, in lieu of flowers, I can’t think of anything she would like more than to know a tree was planted in her memory. If you wish to make a donation in her memory, the family requests donations be directed to A Living Tribute.
