Sarah Jane Girma

April 15, 1974 — May 26, 2021

Sarah Jane Girma (nee McCaslin), 47 of West Chester and formerly of Arden, North Carolina, died on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 with her family by her side. Born to Claire and Sandra (nee Gill) McCaslin on April 15, 1974 in Hornell, New York.

For over twenty years, Sarah made Arden, North Carolina her home. She appreciated being surrounded by the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains; as well as the rich crafting traditions of the region and endless opportunities for outdoor living. Sarah enjoyed working outside in her garden, which was always bursting with color.

Throughout her life, Sarah fully embraced fun and adventure, whether that meant jumping from a second-story window onto a trampoline when she was eight years old, or moving to new places as an adult. She was the mom who loved taking her kids to the park, riding all the rides with them, and making the holidays magical.

The great power and love of God was made manifest in Sarah's ability to care for others. Her desire to serve was extended to everyone she met. She had a warm heart and possessed the rare ability to offer unconditional love to those around her. To Sarah, there was no such thing as a stranger and she had a genuine interest and respect for diverse cultures.

Sarah was able to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. The past few years, she worked as a Registered Nurse at West Chester Hospital, where she had a reputation for going above and beyond for those in her care. Through her diagnosis, difficult treatments, and the uncertainty of a pandemic, Sarah continued to provide the best care to her patients. Her willingness to share her story allowed her to connect in more meaningful ways to her patients and their families.

Beyond having more time with her family and friends, Sarah's greatest desire was to continue being a nurse. Her unwavering convictions allowed her to continue to offer hope to others. Sarah often said, "You have to keep your faith," and that is what she did until the end.

She is survived by her loving husband, Bisrat Girma, two children, Isaac Girma and Zaana Girma, her parents, Claire and Sandra McCaslin, five siblings, Neysa (Michael) Witter, Melony (Gary) Kimzey, Ellen Whitley, Brenda (Kenny) Jackson and Lance Miller. Sarah is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
