Walter L. Starkey, a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on June 6, 2025, at the age of 94. Born on November 16, 1930, in Blanchester, Ohio, Walter dedicated his life to his family and community, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and craftsmanship.

Walter was a man of quiet nature, but those who knew him well understood the twinkle in his eye and his mischievous spirit. He could often be found stirring the pot, enjoying the laughter and joy that ensued from his playful antics. His caring and kind demeanor shone brightly in all his interactions, making him a cherished figure among family and friends.

A hardworking individual, Walter was passionate about woodworking, creating numerous family heirlooms that will be treasured for generations to come. His interests extended to the racetrack, where he was an avid NASCAR fan, attending the Daytona 500 several times and savoring visits to Kentucky Speedway.

Walter's proudest accomplishments included earning his pilot's license and enjoying countless memorable flights with family and friends. Moreover, he took immense pride in building his first home, a testament to his dedication and craftsmanship.

He leaves behind a loving family, including his children Charles Starkey, Carol (Russ) Hakola, and Marsha Gordon. Walter was also a proud grandfather to Timothy (Karmen) Hakola, Scott (Kristy) Hakola, Christopher (Colleen) Hakola, Matthew (Lisa) Hakola, Heather (Dre) Hakola, Derek Hakola, Josh (Ashley) Smith, Gabriel Gordon, Benjamin Smith, and Kyle (Katie) Smith, as well as 16 great-grandchildren.

Walter is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Norma Lee (nee Karr) Starkey, and her children Dean Smith, Benny Smith, Buck Smith, Terry Smith, and Angela Hagenschneider. He was also preceded in death by nine siblings who shared a lifetime of memories with him.

He held a special place in the hearts of several neighbors who regularly checked in on him, ensuring his needs were met.

The visitation will be held at Mueller Funeral Home in Mason, Ohio, on June 12, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM with Pastor Matthew Liddick officiating. Interment will immediately follow in West Chester Cemetery. 

Walter L. Starkey will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him and in the memories he created throughout his life.
